While on vacation on the Nile, Hercule Poirot must investigate the murder of a young heiress.Death on the Nile is an upcoming mystery thriller film directed by Kenneth Branagh, with a screenplay by Michael Green, based on the 1937 novel of the same name by Agatha Christie. Produced by Branagh, Ridley Scott, Simon Kinberg, Judy Hofflund, Mark Gordon and Kevin J. Walsh, the film is a follow-up to 2017's Murder on the Orient Express and stars Branagh returning as Hercule Poirot, along with Tom Bateman (also returning from the first film), Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Jennifer Saunders, and Letitia Wright. The film is the third screen adaptation of Christie's novel, following the 1978 film and a 2004 episode of the television series Agatha Christie's Poirot.

Principal photography began in September 2019, with filming taking place at Longcross Studios in England and on location in Morocco, and wrapped that December.[1][2]

Storyline

Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot's vacation aboard a glamorous river steamer turns into a terrifying search for a murderer when a picture-perfect couple's idyllic honeymoon is tragically cut short. Set against an epic landscape of sweeping Egyptian desert vistas and the majestic Giza pyramids, this tale of unbridled passion and incapacitating jealousy features a cosmopolitan group of impeccably dressed travelers, and enough wicked twists and turns to leave audiences guessing until the final, shocking denouement.

Post-production

Úna Ní Dhonghaíle served as the editor for Death on the Nile.[21] Double Negative (DNEG) provided the visual effects for the film, with Academy Award-winning special effects artist George Murphy as the overall visual effects supervisor.[22] Additional VFX were provided by Lola VFX and Raynault VFX.[23][24]

In January 2019, Patrick Doyle, a frequent collaborator on Branagh's films, was announced as the composer for the film.[25]

Release

Death on the Nile was originally set to be released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures through the 20th Century Studios label on December 20, 2019 before being rescheduled to October 9, 2020. It was then pushed back two weeks to October 23, and again to December 18, in response to the domestic box office underperformance of Tenet during the COVID-19 pandemic.[26][27][1][28] In November 2020, the studio removed the film, along with Free Guy, from its upcoming release schedule until further notice.[29] The next month, the film was rescheduled to September 17, 2021.[3]
